The winner, Fantasia Barrino
Well, it's over. Fantasia Barrino was the winner. In a slim margin over 16 year old Diana De Garmo, Fantasia is the third American Idol winner. I didn't
think this season had the overall singing talent of the first two seasons and the winners didn't have the charisma of a Reuben or Kelly or Clay. They're
definitely going to rush out Fantasia and Diana's CDs so you can have them by Christmas or sooner.
The ratings tell us that this was the biggest Idol ever but many people like
myself were disappointed. When the most memorable moments are William Hung and the Jennifer and La Toya being voted off early, what chance do the
winners have for long term success? Are we going to remember Fantasia's first words as American Idol, "I broke my shoe"? Even Simon was reluctant to
come back, citing the lousy voting as his reason. He'll probably be back. It's all about the money.
Things I liked about this season:
- Ryan seemed a little less annoying.
- Paula and Simon having fun with each other.
- Randy, toning down the saying things 3 times bit.
- Jennifer Hudson.
Things I hated about this season:
- Those lousy car ads that the contestants do.
- The thrown together "bonus shows" where they do more audition footage or interviews.
- The voting.
- The first rounds of eliminations where all the singers played it safe.
- The results.
- The horrible musical guests that no one knows or cares about. Barry Manilow, Gloria Estefan, etc.
My suggestions for next season:
- Current music superstars on the panel.
- Excellent legends that I want to see like Michael Jackson, Prince or Stevie Wonder.
- Actual voting numbers posted. I think if we see the actual numbers, more people would vote.
Well, that's it for now. Let's hope the next season, the contestants come out singing for real. Last time, all the singers played it safe. The first round is when
you oversing and then once in the top, then you develop your style. If you're going to play it safe, sing into your Karaoke machine at home.
