Finding Love Online - Lavalife

02/06/03

Lavalife is an interesting site. It has three separate parts to it; dating, relationships and intimate encounter. Depending on what you want, it's all here. Me, I'm just into dating but if you want something more serious, the relationship section goes into more depth. If you're into more of the whole sex scene, intimate encounters would be for you. Of course, in my mind, just having the intimate encounter section brings the whole respect level of the site down a bit.

Lavalife lets you post a picture (optional) and put together a small personal profile. People who see you can add you to a hotlist, instant message you, send you a "smile" (a preformatted note to pique interest) or send an e-mail. In order to send e-mail you must purchase "credits". It costs 5 credits per e-mail and you can buy 60 credits for $14.99.  This way, you can use the service for as long as you like and only pay if you contact someone.  Fortunately, you only pay for the first communcation with someone, if you continue corresponding, the rest of the e-mail messages are free.

Before you commit to anyone, be sure to see if they have profiles on the other two sections. I've seen a couple women who posted nice profiles on the dating and then a really nasty one for intimate encounters.  Be careful who you go after!

One of the cool things about Lavalife is that making initial contact is pretty stress free.  You just send a smile and if nothing happens, it's no big deal. It's a lot easier to send a smile than a whole e-mail. I got a smile in my first day.

In a nutshell, Lavalife seems like a the singles bar of the online services. It seems pretty non-threatening to make initial contact but any progress you make is totally up to you. It has a hip, modern feel to it and depending on how many people you contact, it could be the least expensive service out there. You could contact up to twelve people for your $14.99. Not bad, unless you're the type who e-mails everyone.

Current pricing for Lavalife as of 02/10/02

60 credits for $14.99
115 credits for $24.99
200 credits for $39.99
