Review : Are you as sick as I am over all of these shows on television which only show rich, unrealistically good looking young kids with problems that are as equally
unrealistic? Well, NBC may have your show. Written by the former writer/producer of "The Larry Sanders Show" (one of my all time favorite shows) and the critically
acclaimed "Ben Stiller show", F&G shows the other side of high school life. The show is basically divided into two parts; first there's a group of young "nerd types" (for lack of a better word)
that are confronted with issues from bullies to lusting after a cheerleader who is actually nice to one of them. The other story line follows Lindsay Weir played by Linda
Cardellini who after the death of her grandmother has started to dress down and try to hang out with the "stoner" crowd. The trouble is that she's intelligent and gets good
grades which puts her (temporarily) at odds with one of the girls in the group. An interesting thing about the different high school groups portrayed is that they all seem equally flawed.
I was impressed with the fact that there were no gratuitous sex or violent scenes. This show actually relies
on good writing (gasp!). Most people might compare this show to "The Wonder Years" but I think there is a certain blunt realism that is missing from today's slick MTV teen
shows. Please watch this show just once and give it a chance. If you don't like it, you can go back to "Dawson's
Creek" and I'll never bring the subject up again.
