NetZero Tries To Pull A Fast One!
09/16/03
Have you seen NetZero's latest TV ads? They promise High Speed access for only $14.95 a month. How can they offer speeds of up to 5 times faster for so cheap?
Here's the lowdown taken from their site:
Data Compression and Image Optimization - Before the text and graphics that make up Web pages
get sent to you over your phone line, NetZero HiSpeed compresses them using a proprietary technology. Less data is sent so your surfing experience is that much faster!
Memory Enhancement - NetZero HiSpeed uses caching technology to store elements of frequently visited Web sites so they load faster on future visits. So in addition to an immediate boost, your
surfing will get even faster as you continue to use NetZero HiSpeed. Continuous Optimization - NetZero HiSpeed continuously optimizes the communication between
your system's modem and our network while you are online. That means that is always working to shorten the amount of time it takes to connect you to the sites you visit.
What does this mean in plain English. Well, in short, Bulls&*%. With the deluge of DSL and
Cable Modem ads, NetZero hopes that you'll be confused and think this is a good deal.
THIS IS NOT DSL OR CABLE ACCESS!
This is regular dial up service. How can they promise speedier access? By offering services
other companies offer for free or are provided for free in your browser already.
Regular NetZero is a decent value if speed is not an issue. Their navigation bar is designed to
spy on where you go, information that they'll eventually sell to marketing companies. Their navigation bar also slows down your connection.
Bottom Line: If you're a regular NetZero customer, stick with the basic plan. If you want
excellent service, contact Earthlink. If you want bad service get AOL or Compuserve (hey, I've used Compuserve for over 6 years and they let me down). If you're into speed, many
companies are finally dropping their prices for DSL services. Some as low as $30 a month! It's about time. Just don't get fooled by scams and read the fine print. Some DSL companies
will make you sign long term contracts and their low prices only last a short time. While you're at it, stay away from the McGriddle. Eww
