Most people younger than 30 don't even know who Barry Manilow is. I asked a lot of people older than 30 to name Barry Manilow songs and they could only come up with Copacabana and some TV
jingles. They missed the mark on this one. Elton John makes sense but Manilow?
Maybe Billy Joel or songs of the Eagles. Much to Manilow's credit, he worked all week with the kids in order to avoid the fiasco that was the Elton John show (his words paraphrased).
The performances:
Diana DeGarmo performed One Voice: She's cute but just not as good vocally as the rest.
Simon gave her praise for a change. She turned in one of her better performances but I predict she'll be in the bottom 3.
George Huff performed Get That Feeling Again: Amazingly, his worst performance on the show.
Out of tune and just bad. No judge had anything good to say (except Paula who said "you stayed in time with the music") and when Simon criticized him, the crowd didn't boo because he was right. But don't feel bad for him, he's not going anywhere. Not this week.
Jennifer Hudson performed Weekend in New England: Jennifer again showed that she's improving! A little harsh on the high notes but outstanding. I hope she wins.
Jasmine Trias performed I'll Never Love This Way Again: A little shrill on her high notes, Jasmine proved she doesn't have the voice to compete with the other women.
She just wasn't hitting the notes with the great pitch or power of the other top contenders. She's good but not better than the other singers. I agree with Simon that the stupid flower has to go. Hey, I'm from Hawaii too but I'm not carrying a ukulele with me, wearing leis or constantly wearing those shirts (but I do have some). If you pander to one audience like that, that's all you'll ever be. She needs to show some stylistic range in her look and her voice. Bottom 3.
La Toya London performed All The Time: A good but maybe too safe performance.
I'm still waiting for her to push herself to show us what we haven't seen before. She has a ton of talent but I want to see her take a risk. Simon said she's the best singer in the competition.
John Stevens performed Mandy: Predictable.
He's got to be going soon. Compared to the other performances, he's the weakest up there. I thought Simon was a little mean comparing him to Stan Laurel (Laurel & Hardy). 16 is to young to pick on.
Does John Stevens really look like Stan Laurel (pictured on the right)?
Fantasia Barrino performed It's A Miracle: A solid performance but not as good as last week. She had a couple of uncharacteristic vocal glitches. Simon
praised her for taking chances and not playing it safe. I think so many singers got knocked out early because they played it safe. Fantasia will probably be one of the final 2.
Bottom Line: I predict Jasmine Trias or Diana DeGarmo will be the next one off. John Stevens will last at least one more week.
