Look at the detail in this shot. The graphics are killer!
Was Fable Worth The Wait?
06/30/05
I had been reading the hype about Fable for years before I finally played it a month ago. Such
huge promises of how your character changes with how you play. Huge and muscled if you're a warrior, lean and mean if you're an archer, thin if you choose magic but equally powerful. I heard
someone say that the terrain would change and scars would stay if you faced a heavy battle. But
things didn't quite work out that way. Is it a failure because it didn't completely live up to the hype? Well...
The Good:
- Fable has a very streamlined interface. Once you get used to it, combat seems natural
- The graphics are beautiful! Weather effects, different terrain, the cities have personality.
- Replay value is high because you can go back and play as evil or good with quite different storylines.
The Bad:
- The leveling system is odd. You level up by going to the guild. It should happen as you
progress. Therefore, you can fight using magic but still choose to develop melee skills.
- No real interactive dialogue. No dialogue trees, just one course of action. Very limited.
- Short game.
- Standard D&D style gameplay and story.
Monsters range from small to huge like this guy.
Summary:
This is a good game for those wanting to try their first role playing game. Fun, cute moments but
not very deep gameplay or story. It's priced well under $30 so it's a great bargain if you're looking for a fun game.
Update: 07/21/05
I've been playing the game for the second time as an evil character. Why is it that playing evil is so
much more fun? Anyway, this is one of the few games that I'm enjoying more the second time.
