The Boondocks is the most amazing cartoon to come out ever. It's funny, insightful, political and it pushes the boundaries of free speech. If you haven't read it, you must. Here's a profile of the cartoon and it's writer Aaron McGruder.

When The Boondocks first appeared in my local newspaper the Los Angeles Times, it caused a small uproar. People wrote in and complained about it being angry and racist. Maybe upon a first view it might be easy to misunderstand the author Aaron McGruder's intentions.

The Boondocks takes two kids from Chicago and transplants them into a white suburb called Woodcrest. Huey Freeman is an idealist with some very strong opinions. People might be able to disregard that but young Huey is a genius who expresses his ideas in hilarious (and sometimes painfully truthful) rants. His brother provides contrast. Riley wants to be a thug (I don't really think he truly is, I mean, he was caught listening to Lauryn Hill). He watches rap videos and wants to be like the stars. Upon realizing that his new address is on "Timid Deer Lane" he goes out renaming his and all the streets around to things like "Notorious B.I.G. Ave" and "Buckshot". The punchline to the story is pictured below.

One of the best parts of my day is reading The Boondocks. When I read what happens in the news, I can't wait to see what Huey will say about it. Huey reminds me of how idealistic I used to be before the weight of the world crushed my spirit (not really). Anyone who knows me personally knows that I rant about things like Huey. Of course I stopped doing it on this web site due to too much negative e-mail. Yeah, I now just promote things I like instead of being a critic of society. Sellout? Whatever.
Anyway, McGruder is one of my favorite people. He's a genius who speaks volumes through his characters. I can't say enough great things about this man and his comic!

I was watching TV this week (03/01/02) and the NAACP image awards show was on. I laughed out loud thinking of Huey Freeman's comments about the show. What do I see next? Aaron McGruder was awarded the Chairman's Award. I was so proud of him for going up there and not being afraid to express his true feelings. He didn't back down, he spoke his heart. Whether you agree with his views or not, he deserves respect. The Boondocks will make you think but it will also make you laugh. If you're not reading it, you're missing out. If you like it (and you will), be sure to buy the books and merchandise in order to support the artist.
