PetersReviews.com Rating : Four out of Five stars.
Network and Time : Fox, Monday 8:30 pm (check local listings)
Cast : Christopher Titus (as himself), Cynthia Watros (Erin, Chris' girlfriend), Zack Ward (Dave, Chris' brother), David Shatraw (Tommy), and Stacey Keach as Chris'
father and tormentor.
Titus is basically the true stories (slightly embellished for laughs) of Christopher Titus who honed his talent on the
road as a standup comedian. Everyone's family is pretty much dysfunctional but Chris reenacts his childhood for his material. At first glance Titus may not seem that
original. You have a 20 something guy who occasionally talks to the camera, a loud father, odd friends but the thing that makes this show work is the acting and charisma of the whole cast.
Casting Stacey Keach as his father was a great move. Keach is truly scary and believable as a father who drinks a lot
of beer and teaches his son how to swim by throwing him off of a dock. Of course many of us were thrown into the water but how many of our
fathers let us stick something into an electrical socket to learn an important lesson about electricity.
Chris' brother is somewhat of a troublemaker and his friend Tommy may be too in touch with his emotions but the combination of the
two give Chris many hilarious comedic setups. One thing I liked about the first two episodes is that everyone's background wasn't laid out too much. You get the sense that you'll learn
more about the characters as time goes on since there seems to be more depth to them than in most sitcoms.
Erin, Chris' girlfriend
(played by Cynthia Watros) seems to be close to perfect. She's beautiful, has a sense of humor, high tolerance for shenanigans and most importantly she can see past Chris' rough exterior (isn't
that what all of us are looking for?). In the first episode, everyone at the office where she works is borderline stalking or harassing her, even her boss (who is a woman). Bottom line, Titus is a funny show. I didn't think I'd like
it but I ended up rewinding both episodes and watching them twice. Chris is somewhat thug-like but his underlying charm will get to you. The rest of the cast
supports the story perfectly while adding their own personalities to the mix. I think the flashbacks with Stacey Keach are possibly the funniest thing about the show. You will remember incidents in your own childhood!
Watch it!
